Nam's Story

Nam Nguyen had the daunting honour of becoming UNIS Hanoi's first Scholarship Programme student.

The Programme had been a long term dream of the Board of Directors, was enthusiastically supported by our entire community and proudly launched to celebrate the School's 25th Birthday in 2012-2013!

But how difficult for any student to move to such an entirely different school and style of education with such high hopes and dreams!

It was a lonely privelege at first, and Nam movingly described it as being like an extra piece of an already finished jigsaw puzzle, but as everyone in our community knows, you don't feel out of place for long at UNIS Hanoi!

Quite quickly the shy, young man who had struggled for conversation embraced all his new opportunities, both in and outside of the classroom, became part of the Model United Nations team representing the School at international conferences, and part of the High School Senate!

And as all of our Scholars will tell you, the freedom to learn, think critically, explore, question and be creative was the gift that Nam valued above all else.

Nam graduated in June 2015. He gained a perfect IB score of 45 and attended Williams College in USA on a full scholarship including a year at the University of Oxford.

He is currently working for Microsoft in Seattle as an software engineer and analyst.

But most importantly his future is now driven by a dream to transform the lives of others in the same way that the course of his life was altered.

This is his story, in his own words. Thank you for listening and thank you for supporting The Scholarship Fund which makes this possible.
