UNIS Hanoi is one of 8 schools that belong to the Mekong River International Schools Association (MRISA). With MRISA, our MS and HS students participate in volleyball, basketball and football (soccer) competitions each year, and we engage in an Annual Arts Festival as well. This year we are trialing a Science, Technology, Arts, and Mathematics event (STEAM).
We are a founding member of MRISA which began in the mid 1990s. From the beginning, the by-laws state that hosting is an expectation of all members.
Two of our MRISA schools have decided that they will not host. The MRISA Board has spent the last 6 months trying to determine how to make this work, but were not able to come up with any creative solutions. The MRISA Board met in Bangkok at the end of the EARCOS conference on 29 October. I have included here a link to the statement from this Board about the future of MRISA starting in the 2018-2019 school year. The main news is that ISHCMC and NISC have decided to leave MRISA at the end of this school year.
Prior to this decision, I had meetings with UNIS Hanoi coaches, admin and parents to ensure that I had a clear understanding of the values and preferences around hosting and home stays. Everyone I spoke with in the UNIS Hanoi community was clear that home stays should remain a requirement to be a member of MRISA.
