Message from the Head of School

I’m delighted to present our highlights for the 2020-2021 Academic Year through this Annual Report. For those who were with us last year, you’ll recall that unlike much of the rest of the world, we were fortunate enough to experience more than 100 days of face-to-face learning before a sharp pivot to Distance Learning in semester two. UNIS Hanoi’s new Mission statement underpins the work we strive to do for our students, families and community every single school day. Alongside the Mission, which was launched in May 2021, we have adopted a set of new values - curiosity, diversity, integrity, community, responsibility, and courage. The Annual Report for 2020-2021 is formatted around these new Values.

Curiosity

The UNIS Hanoi community experienced more than 140 days of face-to-face learning before pivoting to Distance Learning. Our students, faculty, staff and parents demonstrated tremendous fortitude and these are evident in our learning outcomes.

IB Outcomes

As an IB World School, we're proud of our Grade 10 students who achieved the highest Personal Project scores in the South East Region. Additionally, 86% of our IBDP candidates achieved an A or B grade for their Extended Essay. Please find more results below:

Co-Curricular Participation

The UNIS Hanoi Co-Curricular Programme is designed to offer a wide range of opportunities for our students to actively engage in purposeful activities beyond the classroom to develop skills. The activities offered provide students the opportunity to explore their passions while developing leadership and collaborative skills, as well as promoting social growth and maturation of all individuals involved.

Lifelong Learning

Faculty and staff spent 195 hours engaged in some form of professional development over the course of the academic year. Faculty and staff enhanced their knowledge of inclusion, literacy, leadership, social and emotional learning, as well as sustainability among other topics.

Diversity

UNIS Hanoi is the most diverse school in the capital city of Viet Nam, and our diversity is one of the top three reasons new families choose to enrol their child at our School*. There are many ways we celebrate our diversity.

A phenomenal 39 different languages are spoken in our community and 52% of our Class of 2021 achieved a Bi-lingual IB Diploma!

Integrity

To have integrity is to be honest and principled, a value that's important for us to role model to everyone, including the students in our care. As a UN school, integrity also means upholding our UN principles to serve the community we are a part of. Through our philanthropy programme, UNIS Hanoi has supported others in a variety of ways.

The UNIS Hanoi Scholarship Programme

Five new scholars joined our Secondary School in the 2020-21 Academic Year. The UNIS Hanoi Scholarship Programme was established ten years ago, in honour of the School's founding principles. To date, 11 scholars have graduated from UNIS Hanoi and all of them have succeeded in securing university scholarships.

Emergency Relief Fund

As a community, UNIS Hanoi fundraised in response to the severe flooding and landslides in the Central Region and the impact of COVID-19 on communities in Hanoi. Thank you to everyone who donated. A total of USD2645 was raised!

Impact Fund

Thanks to the UNIS Hanoi community, a total of USD81,536 was raised as part of the School's Impact Fund initiative, supporting our students' Big Ideas. With the donations, the School has successfully created a Botanical Garden and begun installations of solar panels. These efforts support the School's sustainability efforts.

As a community, UNIS Hanoi faced another year of unpredictability caused by COVID-19. In an effort to remain united through it all, the School’s theme for the 2020-21 school year was #StrongerTogether.

Connecting with Parents and Students

The Elementary School held 61 meetings and events for parents and/or students to attend throughout the 2020-2021 Academic Year. The Middle School and High School divisions organised a total of 43.

Parent Volunteers

UNIS Hanoi wouldn't be the community we are, without our dedicated parent volunteers! Many parents volunteer their time and expertise to make UNIS Hanoi what it is today. Every member of the Board, the School Community Organisation (SCO) and the Cultural Reps are volunteers. The Board members have officially clocked 668.5 hours, while the SCO organised 60 parent meetings and events!

Engaging with Alumni

With the globe gathered together online, UNIS Hanoi increased opportunities for over 11,000 alumni to connect, network and engage with us and each other.

Sharing our Expertise

UNIS Hanoi believes in sharing knowledge with others, especially fellow Vietnamese educators. This is why the Learning Together initiative was established. Last year's Learning Together Conference was made up of 25 workshops and attended by 500 local educators!

The UNIS Cultural Collection

On April 19, 2021 marked the official launch of UNIS Cultural Collection – an extraordinary learning resource made possible through philanthropy. We are extremely grateful for the generous donations from Ms Nhung Nguyen and Dr Mark Rapoport with their gift of 204 artefacts and Mr Lam-Ms Huyen Family with their support in the installation of this beautiful exhibition. And it made an instant impact!

Responsibility

As one of only two UN schools in the world and a not-for-profit organisation, UNIS Hanoi takes its responsibilities to the community and to Viet Nam seriously. Below is our financial report for the 2020-21 Academic Year.

Service Learning

Our Students also showed responsibility, by participating in a range of Service Learning initiatives that directly impacted some of Vietnam's most vulnerable people.

COVID-19 Preventative Measures

Furthermore, thanks to the School Health Centre and our dedicated Vietnamese colleagues, 420 COVID-19 vaccinations were facilitated by the School. Additionally, our School Nurses together with the leadership team and other staff members, devised a COVID-19 prevention procedure that kept the on campus community safe throughout the year! Faculty and Staff spent a phenomenal 1080 hours temperature checking each and every person who entered campus last academic year.

Courage

The 2020-21 Academic Year was a year of unpredictability. As COVID-19 continued to grip the world, the UNIS Hanoi community responded with immense courage. Members of the UNIS Hanoi community demonstrated courage in a myriad of ways; whether it was reimagining their learning journeys, familiarising themselves with new technology or putting their mental health and wellbeing first.

Free Virtual Summer Programme

With most families choosing to remain in Vietnam for the summer vacation, UNIS Hanoi faculty and staff provided a fun-filled, age-appropriate Summer Programme for our students, completely free of charge.

Providing families with light, breathable reusable masks

In the School's efforts to be sustainable and offer an alternative to single use masks, UNIS Hanoi ordered 1640 masks, suitable for children and adults alike. Last year, 78% of them were purchased by families.

Student Initiated Projects

In spite of COVID-19 restrictions, UNIS Hanoi students remained proactive. 190 High School students attended 39 clubs that formed under the High School Senate's Student Initiative Programmes last year!

Expanding Tech Support

In preparation for periods of Distance Learning, UNIS Hanoi invested heavily in technology and IT security. The Tech department bolstered firewalls, increased IT security across campus and distributed 600 new devices to students in Grades 1 to 8.
