Holly Seo (Class of 2020) was always fascinated by the stars, but it was her time at UNIS Hanoi that truly ignited her passion for astrophysics. Holly recently completed an integrated masters program at the prestigious University of St. Andrews, and decided to continue her studies there with a PhD. She has secured a remarkable full scholarship for the program. This prestigious award, valued at over $200,000, is funded by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), a prominent research funding body focused on science and technology in the UK. The STFC scholarship covers Holly's tuition fees and provides a generous maintenance allowance, research training support, and funding for attending conferences and conducting fieldwork within the UK for the next 3.5 years.

UNIS Hanoi: Igniting a Passion for Astrophysics
Holly credits UNIS Hanoi with playing a significant role in her success, particularly in nurturing her love for outer space. She fondly remembers, "While I always enjoyed science, Mr. Fleming's IB physics class truly sparked my interest in astrophysics. The exploration of complex physics concepts made the subject come alive. I was exposed to new ideas that challenged us to think about things beyond what we can directly observe, like the vast distances between objects far out in space." These lessons undoubtedly influenced her decision to pursue undergraduate studies and now PhD research focused on the connection between galaxies and their halos.

A Thriving Learning Environment
Holly also highlights the unique learning environment at UNIS Hanoi. "I was impressed by the freedom offered to us as students," she says. The school’s strong curriculum supported her academic excellence and also provided opportunities for her to enrich her learning through student-led clubs—while also having fun. For instance, Holly organized an escape room club where she integrated scientific knowledge into enjoyable and interactive games. This experience taught her invaluable lessons in teamwork, transforming ideas into practice, and fostering deeper understanding through hands-on learning.

Leadership and Influence
Holly also actively participated in debate competitions and student life, becoming the leader of the science debate team and serving as a high school student representative. "I'm incredibly grateful that I attended UNIS Hanoi during the most critical time of Grade 11 and 12," she reflects. Throughout this period, she not only excelled academically but also actively developed her leadership skills and made significant contributions to the school community, gaining invaluable experience in diplomacy, networking, and community engagement.

A Journey of Excellence
Holly Seo's journey from a UNIS Hanoi student to a fully-funded PhD scholar at the University of St. Andrews exemplifies the transformative power of education. UNIS Hanoi not only fostered her intellectual curiosity but also provided a nurturing environment that encouraged exploration, authenticity, and critical thinking. Her aspirations extend beyond her PhD, as she aims to pursue a postdoctoral position and continue her career in academia and research in astrophysics, further embodying the lifelong pursuit of knowledge and discovery.

Holly's story serves as an inspiration to current students, demonstrating the boundless possibilities that await those who embrace the unique learning opportunities offered at UNIS Hanoi.
