Anh Tran (Class of 2011) exemplifies the values of global-mindedness, connection, and courage. With an impressive career spanning multiple countries, Anh is now the Head of Exploration at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Vietnam, where she drives innovation in addressing the world's most pressing challenges.

Anh's journey began as a child, frequently moving between countries. Reflecting on this experience, she says, "It was hard at times, but it shaped who I am today – open to meeting new people, experiencing new cultures, and understanding diverse viewpoints." This global perspective was instrumental in her decision to leave a well-established career in the UK and return to Vietnam. She shares, "I wanted to do something meaningful. Returning to Vietnam allowed me to contribute to my home country while working on international development, which is my passion."
Her time at UNIS Hanoi played a pivotal role in this journey. Through its focus on community service and global issues, Anh discovered her passion for making a difference. "The service learning projects at UNIS opened my eyes to the importance of giving back," she explains. As part of initiatives like Operation Smile and the Thuy An Village project, Anh was able to connect her academic interests with real-world impact. "Those experiences helped me realise how privileged we are and instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility to help others."

Before joining the UNDP, Anh worked as a Poverty and Equity Consultant at the World Bank, where she gained deep insights into the challenges of sustainable development. This experience, she notes, "helped me understand the complexities of poverty and the importance of addressing inequalities, a perspective I carry with me in my current role." At UNDP, she now leads initiatives that empower local communities to find innovative solutions to challenges like air pollution and youth employment. "Instead of bringing external experts, we support local communities to bring their own solutions to the forefront," she says.

Anh continues to stay connected with her UNIS classmates, many of whom support her in her work and personal life. "Some of my best friends are still from UNIS. The connections I made there continue to be a key part of my life."
