Service Learning Programme

Service Learning Programme

At UNIS Hanoi, we believe in the transformative power of authentic connection. Our Service Learning programme invites students to better understand themselves, their community, and the world through reciprocal partnerships. Rooted in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), our students develop the knowledge, empathy, and skills required to co-create a fair, inclusive, and cohesive society alongside our local partners.

Service Learning

We view service as an exchange rather than a one-way transaction. By engaging authentically with community needs and assets, students learn that they have a responsibility to contribute positively to our shared world. Service Learning is woven into both our curricular and co-curricular programs, moving beyond "volunteering" to provide deep learning experiences. This takes place during classes, dedicated Service Learning lessons, after-school sessions, and field trips, fostering empowered, active global citizens.

Learn For Learners

Creating Sustainable Impacts

At UNIS Hanoi, Service Learning connects classroom inquiry to real-world complexity. We use the SDGs as a shared framework to collaborate on issues ranging from poverty and health to climate action and peace. This provides a powerful, common language for our students to learn with and from our community partners while taking concrete steps toward global goals.

Action Continuum

As an IB World School, service is not just something we do; it is part of who we are. As students progress through our programmes, they move from participation to leadership, taking increasing responsibility for building sustainable relationships and effective action.

For our Grade 11 and 12 students, Service Learning culminates in the IBDP CAS (Creativity, Activity & Service) programme, a core component of their diploma experience.

Within Elementary School

In Elementary School, students explore service as a form of action connected to their Units of Inquiry. Rather than viewing service as separate from learning, students see it as a natural outcome of their curiosity. All elementary students engage in community building through events like the Walk-a-thon, and participate in classroom-based initiatives that foster awareness and local connection.

Within Secondary School

In Middle School, students from Grades 6, 7, and 8 collaborate in mixed-grade, student-led service groups. This provides them with the opportunity to take on leadership roles, work collaboratively across age groups, and engage directly with local community partners. Under the mentorship of teachers, students can join existing projects or develop new partnerships, focusing on action research, advocacy, and social entrepreneurship.

Within High School (Grades 9–12)

Our High School programme features a wide array of active, student-led groups working in close collaboration with local partners. Directed by student leaders and advised by faculty, these groups move through a rigorous cycle of investigation, planning, action, reflection, and celebration. High School students take ownership of their impact, whether they are taking an existing initiative to the next level or innovating entirely new sustainable solutions. These groups work with our partners, not just for them, ensuring that projects are culturally respectful, mutually beneficial, and create positive social change.
