University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, and University of St Andrews at UNIS Hanoi
UNIS Hanoi recently welcomed representatives from three of the United Kingdom’s most prestigious universities—the University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, and the University of St Andrews—for a special information session with students and families on highly selective university admissions.
The session brought together expert admissions voices to demystify what it truly takes to apply to—and succeed at—top UK institutions.

Beyond Rankings: Finding the Right Fit
Each university offered a distinct perspective on what makes their institution unique.
At Imperial College London, the focus is clear: a world-leading, STEM-specialised environment grounded in interdisciplinary learning, research excellence, and strong industry connections. Students benefit from hands-on, applied learning—whether through lab work, global research, or industry placements—within one of the world’s most dynamic cities.
In contrast, the University of Cambridge emphasised its collegiate system and academically rigorous teaching model. Students learn not only through lectures, but through supervisions—intensive small-group discussions that develop critical thinking and intellectual independence. The experience is immersive, fast-paced, and deeply academic, set within a historic yet innovative environment.
Meanwhile, the University of St Andrews highlighted a very different kind of student experience: a close-knit, globally diverse community in a small coastal town. With flexible degree pathways and strong academic support systems, students are given time to explore and refine their academic interests while benefiting from a highly supportive environment.
What Makes a Competitive Application?
A key message across all three universities was clear: strong grades alone are not enough.
Admissions teams are looking for students who demonstrate:
- Deep academic curiosity in their chosen subject
- Independent and critical thinking skills
- Evidence of learning beyond the classroom
This “beyond the grades” approach means students should engage in super-curricular activities—reading widely, exploring subject-specific topics, conducting independent research, or pursuing academic projects driven by genuine interest.
As one speaker noted, “It’s not about what you do—it’s about what you learn from it.”
Understanding the UK Application Process
The session also provided a clear overview of the UCAS application system, including:
- Early deadlines (15 October) for Oxford, Cambridge, and Medicine
- Standard deadlines in January for most other courses
- The importance of early preparation and subject-specific focus
Students can apply to up to five courses, but unlike other systems, UK applications require a high level of specialisation from the outset.
A Global Perspective, Grounded in Purpose
Beyond the practical advice, the session offered something equally valuable: perspective.
Students were encouraged to think carefully about what kind of environment suits them best—whether that’s the energy of London, the tradition and intensity of Cambridge, or the close community of St Andrews.
The message was consistent across all three institutions: success is not just about getting in, but about finding the right place to grow.
Opening Doors to Future Pathways
Events like this reflect UNIS Hanoi’s commitment to supporting students in navigating global pathways with clarity and confidence. By connecting directly with leading universities, students gain not only information—but insight into the mindset, preparation, and purpose required to thrive at the highest level.
As the session concluded, one thing was clear: the journey to highly selective universities begins long before the application—and it starts with curiosity, initiative, and a genuine love of learning.
