'This is Tet!' Special Events

Tết or Vietnamese New Year marks the biggest and most significant festival in Vietnamese culture. It is an occasion for the Vietnamese people to show their respect to their parents, ancestors as well as welcoming the New Year with the entire family members. According to the Lunar Calendar, this year Tết falls on Tuesday  February 1, 2022. This year is the year of the Tiger.

As the festivities of Tết approach, UNIS Hanoi is thrilled to join with author Phương Tâm Bùi and illustrator Mai Ngô as they share their book This is Tết! with our community. Both will join our Tết Assemblies to read their book with help from UNIS Hanoi students and share their artistic process. Later that day, both will join optional zoom sessions to share about how to take an event and make it into a story as an illustrator and an author.

UNIS Hanoi families are welcome to join the online assemblies and workshop sessions and meet with the creators as well as create their own works. The Tết Assemblies  will be organised virtually on January 20, 2022 by our ES students. The links to the assemblies and workshops are available on the Veracross calendar. It will be a time for you to make connections with your own Tết experience.

  • Tết Assembly for Lower Elementary Assembly 11:00 – 11:30
  • Tết Assembly for Upper Elementary Assembly 11:40 – 12:10
  • Optional Story Writing Workshop 14:00 – 14:30
  • Optional Story Writing Workshop 14:45 – 15:15

In addition, Tâm and Mai are happy to share their work with you. If you would like to order a copy of the book, please contact Ms Huyen at Fahasa via c.huyenfahasa@gmail.com. The book is available in English or Vietnamese from Fahasa. You could also find it at local bookstores and on Shopee.

Read on to learn more about the illustrator and author:

Mai Ngo is a Vietnamese children’s book illustrator. She was born and grew up in Cổ Bản Village – a small town on the outskirts of Hanoi with a big family. Mai graduated from Hanoi University of Architecture. However, she found herself passionate about creating picture books and made a big decision to become a picture book illustrator at a very young age. Her works are inspired by folk tales, ancient myths, and children’s imagination. Mai is now working independently in a small studio full of picture books and grumpy cats in Hanoi.

Tam Bui was born in Hanoi, graduated from National University of Singapore and is currently living in Ho Chi Minh City. In her evenings, she has been reading bedtime stories to her daughter and writing stories that celebrate family values, which she believes are the fundamental foundation for any child to grow into a happy person. Her first picture book ‘This is Tết’ has become a favorite story book for many Vietnamese children. Tam is currently pursuing a Master Programme in Early Childhood – Inclusive Education with a major in Constructivism at Portland State University.

UNIS Hanoi is both excited and privileged to welcome two local Vietnamese creators to share their process with our community. It promises to be an exciting day and a wonderful start to the Tết season.
