Personal Project Exhibition – Class of 2027

Personal Project Exhibition – Class of 2027

On Tuesday night, March 11, the Grade 10 Personal Project Exhibition took place on our UNIS campus. Almost 200 parents and guests came to celebrate this significant milestone in the students’ learning and marvel at the amazing outcomes of independent student-driven learning.

After a word of welcome by Soyoon and Nguyen, guests browsed the almost 80 booths in which the students presented the outcomes of their projects. From synthetic spider webs to inquiry into the psychology of tennis players, from explorations of graphic design to furniture making – the class of 2027 baffled their audience with creativity, ingenuity and personal passion.

On stage DJ Aimi Ishige entertained the guests with the outcome of her learning and Bhuti Makunga interviewed Hayoon Kim about how learning to install surgical sutures helped her overcome trauma after a bicycle accident. Guests also went on a signature hunt to complete their Project Bingo cards. With some good food, it was an entertaining evening.

At the end of the evening, four students were awarded this year’s Personal Project Awards:

  • Personal Project Community Award – For a project with a particularly high impact on our UNIS community – Gia Linh – Creation of a website and organization to help UNIS service groups make more efficient use of talents within our community.

  • Personal Project STEM Award – For a project with a particularly thoughtful exploration of a STEM Topic – Woojin – Development of a robot that shoots ping pong balls with mathematical accuracy.

  • Personal Project Personal Passion Award – For a project particularly born out of personal passion – Isla – Creation of a children’s book to educate young people about Type 2 Diabetes.

  • Personal Project Coordinators Award – For a project with a particularly impressive application of Approaches to Learning skills – Arin – Exemplary inquiry into earthquake safe buildings completed under time constraints due to a large array of other obligations.

The MYP personal project is the culminating project for MYP students in grade 10. Students engage in practical and self-directed learning through a cycle of inquiry, action, and reflection. The Personal Project is a requirement for obtaining the UNIS Diploma in grade 12 and completion is certified by the International Baccalaureate.
