Nurturing Readers: Insights from Kathy Collins’ Visit

Nurturing Readers: Insights from Kathy Collins’ Visit

Parents had the opportunity of participating in a talk with Kathy Collins last week. She is known in education for her work in literacy, having co-authored several influential books on reading instruction and literacy development. Her experience includes working as a literacy consultant at UNIS Hanoi and conducting workshops worldwide, empowering educators and parents to foster a love for reading.

Kathy reminded us that creating a reading life at home is essential for developing young readers. She emphasized that reading should not only be an academic task but a joyful and important part of daily life. When children see reading as a pleasurable activity, they are more likely to develop a lifelong love for it. Parents play a crucial role in this process by making reading an enjoyable and regular part of their child’s routine.

Kathy also shared the value of choice in growing readers. She stressed the importance of allowing children to choose what they read, where they read, and when they read. By providing options, parents can help children discover books that genuinely interest them, making reading a more engaging and meaningful experience. At the same time, children should be encouraged to explore different genres and reflect on their preferences while trying new types of books or topics.

Parents can significantly influence their child’s reading habits by modeling a reading life at home themselves. Kathy encouraged parents to read in front of their children and share insights about their own reading experiences. This practice demonstrates the value of reading and helps children see it as a normal, enjoyable part of life not just while at school. Sharing personal reflections can spark curiosity and inspire children to explore new stories and ideas.

Engaging in conversations about books helps children develop a reading identity. Kathy highlighted the importance of discussing stories, characters, and themes with children. These discussions not only deepen comprehension but also allow children to express their thoughts and opinions about what they read. By valuing their perspectives, parents can boost their child’s confidence and encourage them to view themselves as capable readers.

Instilling a positive reading mindset from an early age is crucial for lifelong literacy. Kathy told parents that fostering a growth mindset, where children believe their reading abilities can improve with effort, is essential. Encouraging children to embrace challenges and learn from mistakes will help them become resilient and enthusiastic readers. By supporting their reading journey, parents can lay the foundation for a lifetime of learning and exploration through books.
