Students’ Journey in G7’s “Empathic Design”

The Design Team is thrilled to introduce our new Grade 7 unit, Empathic Design. The goal is to cultivate not only creative skills, but also a deep sense of empathy and social responsibility. This unit will push students to pick and develop an educational toy assistive device for clients that are outside of their familiar comfort zone. They have already met with their clients or client representatives to better understand their design needs.

The students will engage with one of four unique clients, each offering a distinct challenge and opportunity for meaningful contribution:

  1. Supporting Individuals with Developmental Disabilities (Huong La Center):

    • Students will design assistive devices to enhance independence and quality of life for individuals at the Huong La Center.

    • They will learn about accessibility and the importance of inclusive design, developing empathy and understanding for diverse needs.

    • They will also engage in a group design project to develop a larger item that can be utilized by the whole community such as a PVC walker, wheelchair, or shower gurney.

    • Primary Design skills: 3D printing & Workshop Tools

  2. Creating Educational Toys for Hearing-Impaired Children (Thuy An Centre):

    • They will explore sensory design and learn how to create inclusive learning experiences through visual elements.

    • Primary Design skills: 3D printing & Laser Cutting

  3. Developing Tactile Toys for Visually Impaired Students (Vietnam & Friends):

    • Students will create tactile toys such as Braille board games or sensory storybooks that stimulate creativity and learning for visually impaired children.

    • They will gain insight into tactile exploration and the importance of accessible design for visual impairments.

    • Primary Design skills: 3D printing & Laser Cutting

  4. Designing Enrichment Toys for Rescued Animals (Animals Asia):

    • Students will design enrichment toys that provide mental and physical stimulation for rescued animals, promoting their well-being.

    • They will develop an understanding of animal welfare and learn how to design with compassion, safety, and responsibility.

    • Primary Design skills: 3D printing & Workshop Tools

We believe “Empathic Design” will be a transformative experience for our students, empowering them to become compassionate creators and responsible citizens.
