DP Design Technology trip to Midway Metals Marine factory
Our DP Design Technology students embarked on a valuable educational excursion to the Midway Metals Marine factory, led by Director (and UNIS parent) Anthony Jolly and his team. Midway Marine is a renowned manufacturer of high-quality stainless steel components for the demanding yachting industry.
The tour provided a valuable firsthand experience, showcasing how raw stainless steel is transformed into precision-engineered components through a series of sophisticated processes, including cutting, welding, and polishing. The meticulous attention to detail and adherence to stringent specifications were evident throughout.
The factory floor itself was a testament to lean manufacturing principles, with a clear emphasis on efficiency and waste reduction, reflecting the principles of Kaizen (5S and the avoidance of 7 wastes). It was particularly insightful to observe how technical drawings are translated into actionable plans across different departments, highlighting the collaborative nature of the production process.
Furthermore, the tour provided a tangible demonstration of the material science concepts our students are currently learning, bringing theoretical knowledge to life. The pride evident in both the finished products and the employee working environment was truly commendable.
