CIS Global University Forum in Switzerland Takeaways

CIS Global University Forum in Switzerland Takeaways

Recently one of our high school counsellors, Ms Lori Fairbairn represented UNIS Hanoi at the CIS Global Forum in Switzerland. This conference brought 478 universities  and 288 high school counsellors from 67 countries together to learn about the latest university practices and ensure we know what it takes to get students into universities around the world and are preparing them for the future. Ms Fairbairn also had the opportunity to represent UNIS Hanoi to the universities, encourage them to come visit our school, and advocate for our students applying to their universities.

Here are the most significant takeaways that I believe will benefit our community:

The Role of AI in Education and Society

  • AI’s Rapid Growth: AI’s development is progressing beyond exponential rates, impacting job markets and educational practices. It’s crucial to focus on training students in critical thinking and creativity, as these are skills machines cannot replicate.
  • Personalised Learning: AI offers personalised learning experiences tailored to each student’s needs, it’s important to see how we can use this to enhance education while maintaining critical thinking.
  • Human Connections: Despite technological advancements, fostering human networks remains irreplaceable. We must balance AI integration with social learning opportunities.

Opportunities in Scottish Universities

  • Flexible Education System: Scotland provides a US-style four-year degree program, allowing students to explore a wide range of subjects before specialising.
  • High Satisfaction and Accessibility: Scotland is renowned for having the highest student satisfaction in the UK. Additionally, the breadth of study in the early years and depth in later years offers a comprehensive educational experience.
  • Cultural Richness: Students benefit from Scotland’s rich cultural heritage, enhancing both their academic and personal growth.

Studying in Scandinavian Countries

  • High-Quality Education: Scandinavian universities are known for their high-quality, affordable education, with many programs taught in English.
  • Tuition Benefits: Tuition is free for EU citizens, and very affordable for non-EU citizens, making it an attractive option financially.
  • Focus on Soft Skills: Education emphasises creativity, critical thinking, and leadership, preparing students for diverse career paths.
  • Collaborative Environment: The informal and non-hierarchical approach fosters close student-professor relationships and encourages collaboration.
  • Cultural and Social Integration: Students enjoy beautiful natural environments and a welcoming society that values equality and flexibility, enhancing their overall experience.

Should you disclose a disability on a university application?

  • Benefits of Disclosure: Sharing a disability on applications can secure necessary accommodations, fostering an inclusive learning environment and supporting academic success.
  • Statistical Insights:19% of UK students disclose a disability, enhancing access to resources like specialised academic support and accessible housing.
  • Counselor Support: Counsellors guide students in understanding rights and framing disclosure positively, highlighting resilience and adaptability in applications.
  • Inclusive Practices: Universities are increasingly committed to inclusivity, with no evidence that disclosing a disability disadvantages applicants.
  • Practical Strategies: Encourage early disclosure for accommodations, utilise essays to contextualise academic inconsistencies, and participate in support meetings pre-enrollment.

These learnings emphasise the importance of preparing our students not only academically but also in developing resilience, adaptability, and meaningful connections. We are committed to supporting each student’s journey and ensuring they are equipped to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
