CEMC Mathematics competition

CEMC Mathematics competition

Last November, 25 students took the Canadian Senior and Intermediate Mathematics (CSMC/CIMC) contest which is organised by the CEMC, University of Waterloo (Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing). The CSMC is for Grade 11 and 12 students, while the CIMC is for Grade 9 and 10 students. This individual competition provides challenging math problems for students to enjoy and enhance their problem-solving skills using a mix of short answer and full solution questions. Students get 2 hours to solve the questions.

There were 12 students who ranked in the top 25 percent of contestants world-wide, and they received a certificate of distinction! Of these, we would like to acknowledge the UNIS highest scoring students in each contest. Congratulations to: CIMC contest winner Arin Choi (Grade 10), and CSMC contest winner Joonhyeok Seo (Grade 11).

Students found the mathematics contests meaningful and challenging this year. Arin said: “I enjoyed the challenge of solving complex problems and appreciated how it helped me improve my problem-solving abilities in unfamiliar contexts.” Joon said: “I participated in the CSMC because I wanted to challenge myself and see how I could apply what I know in math. It was a unique opportunity to think through unfamiliar problems and develop my problem-solving skills.”

In February, we took part in another CEMC contest (the Pascal/Cayley/Fermat contests for Grade 9/10/11). The results for this contest will come out and be celebrated soon.
