G5 PYP Exhibition: Dreams Turned Reality | Latest New

It is incredible to think that the idea of high school students engaging with elementary school students who have the same passion for global issues as we UNISMUNers have goes all the way back to a UNISMUN leadership meeting in October 2019.

Binh and Mai An, new members of the UNISMUN leadership team, approached Senor Graña with a request: “We joined UNISMUN because we love global issues. We want to engage with others at UNIS who feel the same way.”

That simple request got UNISMUN thinking. They reached out to grade 4 and grade 5 teachers to see how they could be helpful; partnerships were forged;a project developed where UNISMUN students would work with elementary school students to discuss global issues of importance to them.

MUN Community Mentors was born!

Since then, our UNIS Service Learning department has incorporated these mentors and it has become a proper UNIS service club where high school students work with the PYP Coordinator, Ms. Kay, grade 5 teachers led by Mr. Tom, and grade 5 students all year.

UNISMUN would like to congratulate the Grade 5 students for successfully finishing off the PYP Exhibition! Every year, 5th Grade students engage in the PYP Exhibition, which is a significant and challenging project where students pick issues they are passionate about. Then, after months of inquiry and investigation, they display, discuss, and find other ways to represent their passion and share it with the UNIS community. In this process, many of our UNISMUNers jump in to help the 5th graders all year as part of the service club.

Specifically, the Community Mentoring Service Group for high school students is a great opportunity to connect with 5th-grade students and work as mentors to help the PYP project be fun and successful!

This whole year, the Community Mentoring Service Group went to their classrooms each week to help enhance their learning by further developing their ATL skills.

Emily Dinh, a leading member of the Community Mentors Service group, summarized, “At the beginning of the year, we focused on building fundamentals such as research skills and communication skills. Later on, we aided their inquiry process and helped out by providing feedback and acting as a supporting role.”

The Community Mentoring Service Group visited the 5th graders in action during their Exhibition this week. All of our highschoolers were very impressed and happy to finally see the result of everyone’s amazing work! Linus Scheibe said, “As a group, we [Community Mentoring Service Group] are proud of their tough work over the past few months. The hard work has paid off as seen in the powerful exhibition.” He also advises them, going off to middle school, “Work hard, but also make sure to take some breaks.”
