A Wonderful Week of Goals

WHAT A WEEK! As one of only two UN schools in the world, UNIS Hanoi is passionate about the important work the UN does in order to meet Agenda 2030. As a School, we know that it takes all of us to act in order for the UN’s Agenda 30 Sustainable Development Goals to be achieved. That’s why the SDGs are embedded in our curriculum throughout the year, and during SDG week the Division teams bring them into sharp focus.

Our students, thanks to the talents of our faculty, rose to the challenge. Early Years students learned about SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Social Affairs, our Kindergartners thought about the arctic polar bears and how ice is melting as well as the impact of deforestation on animals while Grades 1 and 2 explored the SDGs through the lens of the seven continents. Upper Elementary School students explored a range of SDGs throughout the week in various break out rooms. Grade 4 students designed posters to encourage Climate Action, while participating in workouts that got them thinking about their health and wellbeing. Secondary School students turned to the 2021 Sustainable Development Goal Report to make inquiries about the SDGs while others researched and presented on topics related to Human Rights, Education, Going Green, Health, Food, Animal Rights, Disaster Relief, Community Development, and Water. Grade 10 students took a hard look at Human Rights and SDG16.

Enjoy these slideshows that show just a hint of the SDG-linked learning that took place throughout the week.

Our First Virtual UN Day!

Students, faculty, staff and parents came together at 8.45 on Friday November 19 to celebrate our much-loved UN Day!

UNIS Hanoi is one of only two UN international schools and as such, our UN Day celebrations each year is a calendar highlight for the community, and more importantly a focus of learning for our students.

This year, the Acting Interim UN Resident Coordinator for Viet Nam, Dr Kidong Park delivered the guest speech. Speaking directly to UNIS Hanoi students, he said, “As students in one of only two UNIS’ in the world and guided by the first three words of the UN Charter – ‘we the peoples’, you are in an unrivaled position to start to help the world tackle the most important challenges of our times. Make your voices heard. Encourage wise and humane decision-making. Demand a better, safer and more equal future for your and succeeding generations.”

The Lead Reporter of UNDP’s Youth for Climate Action in Viet Nam, Hoàng Ngọc Xuân Mai reminded our community that no one is “too young or too old to act”. She also said, “Vietnam has promised to achieve Net Zero by 2050. It’s very critical that Vietnam and other countries meet their Net Zero Goal in order to keep temperatures rising. Do not choose extinction. The dinosaurs didn’t know what was coming from them but we do. We need to be on the right slide of history.”

Make a Pledge

Following an impassioned speech to our community, our Head of School, Jane McGee pledged that UNIS Hanoi will reduce consumption and commit to clean energy. THANK YOU to our students for taking immediate action and filling up our padlet with their personal or collective pledges.
