A Week of Global Impact: Celebrating SDG Week

This week (8 November), in the lead up to our UN Day celebrations, our Elementary students have been actively engaged in learning about and reaffirming our shared commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through a variety of exciting and meaningful activities, our young learners have demonstrated their commitment to creating a better world.

Our youngest learners in Early Years have delved into specific SDGs that resonate with their interests and the world around them. From exploring the wonders of marine life to cultivating sustainable gardens, our EY students have been inspired to become responsible global citizens. They have pondered questions about their role in the environment and how they can contribute to a sustainable future.

Kindergarten students have connected their learning to the SDGs through a variety of engaging activities including a buddy time scavenger hunt, explored mathematical concepts related to sustainability, and shared their knowledge through a collaborative slide deck.

Grade 1 students have embraced the concept of “Teaspoons of Change” by focusing on a different SDG each day. They have connected these global goals to their current unit of study and their beloved stuffed animals, fostering a sense of empathy and responsibility.

Grade 2 students have expanded their understanding of the world by learning about different continents and the SDG challenges faced by diverse communities. Through teacher-led presentations and classroom discussions, they have gained a global perspective and a desire to make a positive impact.  They also enjoyed connecting with their Early Years buddies for some SDG week activities.

Grade 3 students have immersed themselves in the world of SDGs through a variety of activities, including read-alouds, quizzes, action pledges, games, and creative projects. They have explored the interconnections between different SDGs and developed a deeper understanding of their role in creating a sustainable future.

Grade 4 students have actively participated in workshops focused on various SDGs, allowing them to explore their interests and develop a passion for specific global issues. They have also engaged in collaborative projects, such as designing SDG superheroes, fostering a sense of teamwork and creativity.

Grade 5 students are currently working on a project that connects their learning to the SDGs. More details about their specific activities will be shared in the coming weeks.

By embedding the SDGs throughout our curriculum, and elevating our energy once a year as we celebrate SDG Week, we are empowering our students to become informed, compassionate, and active global citizens. We are proud of their enthusiasm and dedication to making a positive sustainable impact in the world.

Students had the opportunity to explore the SDGs in Vietnamese, French, Korean and Mandarin while making connections to their current units of inquiry.

Our dedicated Library Leaders have been busy creating an SDG reading challenge for the month of November.
