G11 Explores Hanoi Art at Vũ Dân Tân Museum

On January 27, Grade 11 Visual Arts students enjoyed a rare opportunity to visit the newly opened Vũ Dân Tân Museum. This field trip was a significant “full-circle” moment, as students had spent the start of the first semester studying this Hanoian master’s pivotal influence on Vietnamese art. The museum opened its doors privately just for our students, offering them a rare, quiet space to connect with the works of a man who essentially established the contemporary art scene in Hanoi.

The visit was made truly exceptional by our host, Natasha Kraevskaia, who gave the students a tour of the collection. Together with her late husband, she opened Salon Natasha, Hanoi’s first independent art space. Hearing Ms Kraevskaia discuss their legacy gave students a firsthand look at how artistic independence was forged in Hanoi.

Students were inspired by the collection, particularly in how Vũ Dân Tân transformed mundane, everyday objects into profound creative statements. They liked how he  integrates Vietnamese culture and literary themes into modern, experimental artworks that included painting, sculpture and performance art. Beyond the aesthetic, learning how Tân navigated the shifting social landscapes of the 1980s and 90s allowed the students to think about day to day life along with the art scene in Hanoi during that time period.
