Lights Out
Friday, 20 April 2007
Last Friday, 20 April, UNIS participated in the world-wide Lights Out Day, where all lights on the campus were turned off for the day. Thanks very much to EVERYONE at school for making the day such a success. Whether big or small, the contributions made by teachers helped to educate our Middle/High school students about the effects of global warming in the following activities:
-
Grades 6 to 11 science classes were educated on the causes of, effects of and possible solutions to global warming.
-
Grade 11 gave a presentation to the elementary school assembly that was met with great enthusiasm. In the words of our Elementary Principal, they were “de-lighted”.
- Some Grades 9 and 10 students took posters to their parents so that they could implement the Lights Out day at their businesses.
- Students in Middle and High School (Grades 6 – 10) watched “An Inconvenient Truth”
-
High School French students read a press report in French on the catastrophic consequences of global warming predicted for this century until 2100 and practiced vocabulary on global warming. They are also making posters on this topic to be displayed in the library.
- Some Grades 9 and 10 students suggested that, next year, UNIS has an electricity free day with air-conditioners and computers turned off to be added to lights out.
- In Grade 9 EAL English class, as a tribute to Earth Day, students created web pages that focused on specific issues related to conservation, biodiversity, and global warming.
