I went to UNIS when it was still on Amsterdam campus, then we moved to Van Phuc. Trying to track down some old teachers ie. Mr.Gerbert, Mr.East, Mr.Lyons and the Jacobsens- anyone heard from them? Since UNIS, Ive completed a Bachelor of Economics, Masters of International Public Health and PhD in Public Health and Policy (all in Australia). And Ive worked for the Australian Government as a Health Advisor and as an Associate Lecturer at the University of Sydney. Im now in Thailand as an Australian Youth Ambassador working as a HIV/AIDS program manager in Chiang Mai. Next? Going back to Australia to complete a Bachelor of Medicine. I was wondering whatever happened to the time capsule we put away at UNISHANOI Van Phuc Campus? I recently caught up with Mr. and Mrs. Baird who are now based in Chiang Mai. I still keep in touch with my graduating year and we are hopefully planning a reunion! Received: 3 December 2008
I was an ESL teacher at UNIS for six years. It was my longest and by far my happiest overseas experience. I probably would have stayed on if I hadn't met my husband, a Canadian, in Hanoi. We left in 2000 to start a new life in Canada. When I arrived, Graham Cherry had just left and Jim Ambrose was the new head. The highest grade was 9, and I was the homeroom teacher. There were 12 students: Mariann, Jordan, Jon, Sumita, Gorawee, Patricia, Hyon Il, Markus, Suman, Cedric, Daniel, and Jani. They met in my tiny ESL classroom every morning to "check in". They were a great bunch, as were my ESL students that first year: Hiroki, Hye Myung, Eri, Min A, Hong Cheol, Hyun Jeong, Keisuke, Christoffer, Maria, Sang Man, Sang On, Do Yen, Jong Heon and his sister Jie Ie, Hye Ri, Min Ho, Yee Jae, Joon Beom, Jun Sik and his brother Jun Hyung, Hye Yoon, Yujiro, Saori, In Myung, Jeong Yeon, Munesh, Joo Hyun, Onka, Choi, Linh, and Yee Jun. There's so much to say about UNIS in those days that hard to know where to start. Such a rich mix of memories and feelings. The school was absolutely unique, as was Hanoi in those days. I will never forget my students and colleagues, or the wonderful support staff. Remember the dances and movie nights, and the sleepover at the old Hanoi-Amsterdam campus? Seeing the French school students go home for their 2-hour lunch every day? Keeping our jackets on all day long in the cold, drafty classrooms? (I wore long underwear to school every day for two months.) The old electric heaters? Swedish camp on Friday nights? The day the playground in front of the school turned into a lake? The controversy over the tuck shop (healthy snacks or junk food)? Variety night at the Opera House? (Mrs. Henke was a wonderful music teacher!) And the amazing field trips into the villages and countryside? I had many more students in the ensuing 5 years -too many to mention. I have all the yearbooks and every few years I get them out and look at all your pictures. I have great memories of you all and hope you are doing well. I ended my overseas career when I left UNIS. I now teach ESL to adults (immigrants and international students) in the community college system in Toronto, the most multicultural city in the world! My husband and I hope to visit Hanoi again someday. Received: 26 November 2008
I was so excited to find this page and looked through it immediately to find people I might remember, but I must be awful with names, because I couldn't find any of my friends. Although, I've found a lot of them on Facebook. I did years 1-5 at UNIS and really wish I could go back and visit (although I hear the newest campus (post Amsterdam and Van Phuc) is really fancy) but that probably won't happen for many years. I'm going into my junior year in college and am absolutely loving it. I'm studying an array of things such as Spanish, history and sociology. If any of you remember my sister, Rita, she is one year out of college and is getting married this July. Received: 7 June 2007
