Day Celebrations
UNIS, 27 October 2006
On
Friday 27th October UNIS celebrated our annual United Nations Day with
a whole-school assembly held on the covered sports court. The assembly
was also attended by members of the diplomatic community, representatives
of United Nations agencies in Vietnam, parents and friends of the school.
The assembly began with the traditional Parade of Flags; which symbolises
the diversity of nations that resides within UNIS as well as highlighting
our essential unity. Mr John Hendra, the United Nations Resident Advisor,
spoke about the aims of the United Nations and the theme for this year:
Gender Equality in Education. Mr. Alun Cooper (Head of School) reflected
on the importance of unity and cooperation in our school. The student
band entertained guests, and two performances of music, dance and drama,
explored the themes of gender equality through the ages.
After the assembly, students, parents and staff shared an International
Pot-Luck Lunch, with food generously supplied by parents. This year,
food was served by Grade level in individual classrooms. This was a great
success, as it ensured that the most important people in our school – our
students – were fed in good time. Thanks goes to all those who
helped organize this event and to the parents for providing the delicious
array of food. Leftover food was sent home to the families of our Operations
and Support Staff and was also donated to Blue Dragon Children’s
Foundation. The Foundation extends its thanks to UNIS for the real feast
that they enjoyed.
After lunch, students were involved in workshops. For Elementary School,
these were special classes about the United Nations conducted by the
teachers. Middle and High School Students enjoyed guest speakers presentations
on Gender Equity. Thank you very much to all those who generously gave
their time to present and organize these activities. In particular
we would like to thank :
Mr Eisuke Tajima of UNESCO (Grade 6)
Mrs Noala Skinner of UNICEF (Grade 7)
Mrs Margaret Sheehan of WHO (Grades 11 and 12)
Ms Sarah Dehovere of WHO (Grades 11 and 12)
Message from the Head of School

Dear All,
I am writing to express my thanks to everybody for a marvellous
UN Day on Friday 27 October; indeed, I believe it to have been
the best that I have seen here at UNIS. The day was calm and
well organised. As I walked around the school throughout the
day it was a delight to be able to see so many engaged and happy
students, so many teachers clearly enjoying what was going on
and a large number of parents who were relaxed and very happy
to be sharing the day with us.
The day did not happen by accident and many people played a role
in helping to provide us with such an enjoyable occasion. To
everybody who helped, many thanks. However, I do wish to single
out a few people for special thanks. In particular, I would like
to mention:
Lesley Peacock
Conal Atkins
Margritha Hofman
David Cameron
Kate Brown
Sally Monteith
Liam Eaton
The Operations team
I would also like to pay tribute to the work
of the PTA in coordinating the International Lunch, in particular
Ms Brenda
Tunnell (Elementary),
Ms Naoko Inui and Ms Julian Carey (Middle School) and Ms
Jee Yeon Lee (High School).
It was a great day and it reflected who we are as a school.
I look forward to sharing many such days with you and to
celebrating our successes together.
Best regards,
Alun Cooper
Head of School
