UNIS Invitational Swim Meet
Pool, 12 May 2007

If you were lucky enough to have been at the pool last Saturday the 12th, then you got to see a fabulous and historical day at UNIS! The Hammerheads swim team were host to the International School of Ho Chi Minh City for our first ever invitational swim meet. Over 100 swimmers, coaches, parent volunteers, staff volunteers and spectators made the day an exciting, thrilling and entertaining one for all. Once again nearly all our swimmers set a personal best time. 37 records were made by Hammerheads swimmers, of which 21 were the breaking of a previously set record. Setting or breaking records were: Sabine Haspels (5 of them!); Phil Pincus, Kento Shinoda, Sung Jun Park (4!); Margret Barclay, Billy Choo, Callum Kilpatrick, Nils Jaranovs (3!); Tariq Bethune, Nicholas Shell, Stefan Evers, Shizuka Oinaga, Daan Schuttenbelt (2!); and Nina Reinhardt, Elena Cornaro, Rina Furubayashi, Masaru Oinaga, Victoria Rudolph-Stringer, Madeline van der Poel, Jacob van der Poel, Nicolene Poulsen and Aidan Omdahl with 1.

Individual age group champions were Callum Kilpatrick (9-10 Boys), Sabine Haspels (9-10 Girls), Jacob van der Poel (15+ Boys) and Shizuka Oinaga (15+ Girls). Congratulations for such an outstanding achievement!

The warmest of thanks goes out from we coaches to those volunteers who again made swimming at UNIS a fantastic success. I overheard comments on the day that at UNIS, the parents ‘really get the job done’ and I felt great pride to be associated with you fine people. As the kids danced the evening away, many of our visiting swimmers told me how happy they were to have come and how much they enjoyed getting to know their host family. Such new friendships are indeed a magical sight to see.

Results from the competition can be found here. Congratulations again to all Hammerheads swimmers for a job well done.

On behalf of coaches Andrea Brown, Eleonora Jaranova, Heather Westwood and Rachel Poff,

Brian Healy
