Global Warmin' Formin'
Lights Out Day Activity, 20 April 2007

Mr. Powell’s Grade 8 Language A English class put their own creative slant on the recent ‘Lights Out’ Day.  Their poem ‘Global Warmin Formin’ drew inspiration from the Benjamin Zephaniah poem ‘Dis Fightin’.  (Read it on the web or find it in a poetry book in the library!)  Students had only a night to get ideas together and then a forty minute lesson.  The poem was a group effort and the aim was to make people aware of Climate Change around the world.  The activity came at the end of a six week poetry unit in which students had to create two poetry anthologies.

Global Warmin' Formin'….

Change of weather da animals drownin
Temperature increasin ice meltin
Holes formin in da ozone layer

Da children cryin coz da polar bears dyin
Da politicians lyin
Dis tempature risin
Dis inconvenient truth for sale
Dis air is hard to inhale
We cannot fail

Da north pole shrinkin
Got da heat meltin down da ice
Betta panic coz it aint nice
Start thinkin
Coz we betta do someting
For we start sinkin

We gotta make sacrifices
Since we destroyin our planet
And that is an ‘An Inconvenient Truth’
Our childrens children deserve someting betta

(Repeat)
Da children cryin coz da polar bears dyin
Da politicians lyin
Dis temperature risin
Dis inconvenient truth for sale
Dis air is hard to inhale
We cannot fail

All the poet can do today is to warn.  That is why the true poets must be truthful.
