Casino Night
Grade 8 Maths Activity,
23 November 2006
On the evening Thursday, November 23rd, middle school
students and parents at UNIS were able to see the future of the gaming
industry. Twenty-six new games of chance were unveiled, including Checkmate,
Chicken Cow Moo, and the ever-popular Double Trouble. For an hour
and a half, guests were given free money to spend at the UNIS Casino,
moving
freely from game to game in an attempt to hit the jackpot and break the
casino bank.
The activity was actually an opportunity for the 8th grade students to
display both their understanding of probability and their creativity.
The students followed the MYP design cycle in investigating, planning
and creating new games of chance. Casino Night was created as a
method of objectively evaluating the games and the students' ability
to correctly
calculate various payoffs. Thanks to all members of the community
who came out for what was truly a fun evening, as evidenced by the smiles
and comments of praise by so many - even though they lost their (fake)
money! The great majority of games proved to be profitable, as
1701 'UNIS bucks' were brought in by the casino with Marika Samuelsson
and Lucy
Martin's Double Trouble bringing in the most for any one game. Congratulations
to all of the 8th graders for making such a wonderful evening of games!
We look forward to even more players coming by next year.
