Last Assembly of the 2006-2007 School Year
Our last day of school was 15 June and our whole school assembly was warm and enjoyable, and a fitting end to a good school year.  The school said farewell to leaving students and teachers while also acknowledging the musical talents of some of our students. 

 

Grade 10 Enrichment Day
Classes were cancelled for Grade 10 students on Thursday and Friday!    Instead of teacher lead classes, these students lead their own learning.

Oliver - Grade 3 & 4 Stars Shine Brightly
Whilst Oliver Twist, one of Charles Dickens's best-known novels, is a grim account of the life an orphan, last night’s performance was anything but grim.

 

Origami
On Monday June 4, Mrs. Nishikori, Mrs.Nishimura, Mrs. Yukinori and Mrs. Yamakawa  visited Grade 6 English B classes and taught the students how to make various beautiful origami figures, including the paper crane. 

 

Graduation Class of 2007 Ceremonies - Watch Video
Last night the 12th Grade students graduated from UNIS-Hanoi.  The graduation ceremony was our largest to date and it was a smooth and enjoyable ceremony.  The students expressed their joy at the ceremony as indeed did their parents and friends.

 

Rome Sweet Rome
Congratulations to the UNIS Staff for their great production of Rome Sweet Rome!  It was a fun evening for parents and students and very entertaining to see the staff dress up, act out and have a little fun.

 

Tree Planting Ceremony for Grade 12
In 2005, Grade 12 parents and students got together and decided that, each year, the Grade 12 students should leave behind a gift for the school.

 

Roll Up, Roll Up the Circus was in Town
ECC children were under the Big Top on Thursday night for a Circus extravaganza.  The evening was hot with anticipation and as the Big Parade began the evening was off to a super start.

 

Disco Fever
Grade 8 student council provided a fun filled night when they hosted the inaugural grade 4/ 5 disco dance held recently.  All students and teachers joined in with the dancing and games.

 
UNIS Invitational Swim Meet 2007 - Results
If you were lucky enough to have been at the pool last Saturday the 12th, then you got to see a fabulous and historical day at UNIS! The Hammerheads swim team were host to the International School of Ho Chi Minh City for our first ever invitational swim meet. 
 
EcoBoat Study Tour
The UNIS Green Team and some Year 3/ 4/ 5 students recently disembarked from the EcoBoat.  Look inside for the report and photos.
 

International Rugby Coach Visits UNIS
Over 70 students from UNIS and other schools in Hanoi attended a Junior Rugby Coaching Clinic on a recent weekend conducted by Pierre Villepreux, International Rugby Board Development Manager and former coach of French National Team.

 

Middle & High School Art Show Success
True Fluxus in art was experienced through the myriad of studio works from across the grades, as well as the Hoi An fashion show and Digital Imagery presentations at our recent art show.

 
Elementary Art Show Summary
The ECC and Elementary school recently held their Art Show at UNIS. It was a colourful week on campus, and the displays were welcoming, varied, and showed a large cross section of artwork produced over the year.
 

Grade 2 Field Trips to the Zoo
Last week the Grade Two students went to the Hanoi Zoo.   Everyone enjoyed seeing the many animals and this generated discussions about the role zoos play in protecting animals.

Trek to Mt Fansipan
Recently, nine students and three teachers set out on UNIS’ first ever outdoor hiking expedition to climb Mt. Fansipan.  After a long train ride to Sapa Friday night, the group set out to Tram Ton to begin their climb.

Grade 6 French Pancake Sale for Cuc Phuong
Recently Mr. Goegebeur’s Yr 6 French class tried out a French pancake recipe and organized a Pancake Extravaganza, the Most Spectacular Pancake Sale Ever Witnessed In UNIS History!

Reefs to Rainforests
Selected students from 9th to 12th grades went on a trip to Thailand in February to learn about the unique natural ecosystems in the area. They recently presented their experience to the rest of the 9th – 11th graders at a high school assembly.

Elementary Swim Meet Results
The UNIS Elementary Swim Meet was a huge success this year!!  We had all the students in Grades 3, 4 and 5 competing for their School House Team and swimming in plenty of races.

How Do You Make a Healthy Snack?
Grade 1 with their parents showed each other how to make a healthy snack. All the snacks came from their home country. Then at snack time all grade 1 with their parents and teachers ate the yummy, healthy snacks.

 

Auction for Prom
Grade 12 held an auction to raise money and awareness for their upcoming prom. The Prom will be on May 26th, Saturday @ Melia Hotel.

 

Lights Out Activity at UNIS Hanoi
Last Friday, 20 April, UNIS participated in the world-wide Lights Out Day, where all lights on the campus were turned off for the day. Thanks very much to EVERYONE at school for making the day such a success.  Click inside to see what activities took place. 

 

How to Stay Active
There are many ways to stay active. For their assembly, Grade 1 showed us some fun and easy ways.  Doing the Hokey Pokey, setting up our own circuit training and even dancing while we are sitting in the car anything is possible.

 

Pizza Meet Summary
Our swim team’s first ever “Pizza Meet” in which nearly 50 of our swimmers from Elementary to High school competed for great prizes was held recently.  A fun, friendly yet spirited atmosphere filled the day as teammates raced each other in a variety of sprint events.

 

Grade 2 Assembly
Grade 2 have been learning about how artists use many different forms of expression to convey their uniqueness as human beings.

 

IB Art Show
The grade 12 IB Art students presented their 2 year portfolio in an exhibition at the Ciputra Ballroom from April 13th to 15th.

 

Earth Day is 22 April 2007
As a tribute to Earth Day, Grade 9 EAL students have created web pages that focus on specific issues related to conservation, biodiversity, and global warming.

 

Hammerheads Swimmer takes 5th Place
Last week, Nina Reinhardt of grade 9 took part in the 2007 Vietnamese National Age Group Championships in Da Nang. Vietnamese swimmers of ages 10 to 17 came from around the country to compete in a variety of events over a five-day period.

Hanoi Schools Rugby Championship - 24 March 2007
It was so good to see so many of our students from 3rd to 12th Grades playing rugby on our fields recently.  There were so many good games and it was wonderful to see our students enjoying themselves in such a sporting competition.

 

Much Ado About Nothing
The Shakepeare Society, an after school activity, recently mounted a production of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. The play is a set text for the IB English syllabus and one of Shakespeare’s most loved and successful comedies.

 

Learning about Lacquer
As part of the Vietnamese program and our UOI, Grade 2 students met a special visitor, a lacquer painter.  His name is Thong.  Mr. Thong has shown us how to draw a portrait and how to make a lacquer painting, the unique art in Vietnam.

 

UNIS Singers Meet with Yen So Kindergarten
44 UNIS Singers travelled to Hoang Mai District recently for a special meeting with the children of Yen So Kindergarten. They were greeted by an amazing welcoming committee of 3 4 and 5 year olds dressed in bright costumes and playing home made instruments.

 

Elementary Sports Day
Elementary Sports Day was very successful this year!!  We had more than 400 students from Discovery to Grade 5 participating in a variety of events throughout the morning.

 

Grade 1 Celebrations
Grade 1 have been experiencing celebrations from around the world. Over the past 2 weeks we have played games from Korea, Vietnam, USA, Canada and England. Made crafts from Japan and England.

 

Middle School Formal Spring Ball
The Middle School Formal Spring Ball was held on Friday 2nd March from 6.30pm to 9.00pm in the Ciputra conference room. Our MC‘s, and DJ’s, Vicky, Mikaela and Aurelie were wonderful because they organised many fun activities during the evening.

 

The Global Marketplace
Grade 4 recently learned the Unit Of Inquiry, The Global Marketplace. Children undertook inquiries into needs and wants, goods and services, supply and demand and buying, selling and trading which all took place in a recent assembly.

 

Healthy Snack Day
The Green Team organized a Healthy Snack Day to promote healthy foods for healthy bodies and also create a healthy environment.   We hope that families will continue to take the time to prepare a nutritious snack, free of any extra wrappings and non biodegradable wrapping (mainly plastic).

 

Walkathon for Blue Dragon
Elementary children from pre k to grade 5 participated in a walkathon on Friday 2nd March.  Each child ran or walked approximately 15- 20  minutes  around a 250 metre sport field.

 

Chúc Mừng Năm Mới !
Tet, a short way of saying Tết Nguyên Đán, is the most important festival for Vietnamese people in the year. Tet marks the beginning of a new year on the Lunar Calendar and the beginning of Spring. 

 

Spanish in the Kitchen
Last Friday the ten 11th grade Ab Initio Spanish students had a session cooking simple food used every day in many parts of Latin America, food items that have been in use for thousands of years.

 

Stop the Use of Child Soldiers
On Monday, an interesting sight would have greeted you had you come in walking to UNIS during Middle High school lunchtime. Students were crowding around a big poster, printing their own red hand prints all over this.

 

Guerilla Theatre
The Grade 8 performance arts class wreaked a bit of havoc at our school last Friday.  Students participated in a form of Guerilla Theatre and invaded classrooms throughout the campus.

 

Vietnam Museum of Ethnology Field Trip
To finish their Unit of Inquiry ‘Houses, Houses Everywhere’ Grade 1 visited the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology and saw many different types of houses found in Vietnam.

 

The Global Marketplace
In the current Year 4 Unit Of Inquiry, The Global Marketplace, students have created their very own businesses. The task for grade 4 students was to persuade discerning shoppers, the grade 3 children, to purchase their products or services at the Trade Expo.

For their Unit of Inquiry ‘Houses, Houses Everywhere’, Grade 1 went for a walk around Tay Ho District.

 

The Mokens - Tet Field Trip
Selected students from 9th to 12th grades are going soon on a trip to Thailand to visit an indigenous group known as the Mokens. During the visit, they will be going to explore their culture, understand their way of living and how they survived the Tsunami in 2004.

 

The Blind Man & the Elephant
January 26 is India’s National day.  The Grade 3’s brought a touch of Bollywood to our assembly on this special day with our dramatization of the story of ‘The Blind Men and the Elephant’.

 

Grade 10 French Activity
Grade 10 French have been studying the film Amelie and each student dressed up & acted out a character from this film, acting out the themes of love marriage & relationships.

 

Bat Trang Pottery Village Visit
The Grade 2 students visited Bat Trang as part of their Unit of Inquiry “Go”. On the way to Bat Trang they observed many forms of transport and were constantly spotting new kinds.

 

Grade 6 Humanities Activity
Grade 6 Humanities is currently investigating Ha Noi and Vietnam.  Each student has taken responsibility for one of the unique 36 streets of the Old Quarter.  Field trips recently took place.

 

Spirit Week
Every year, the Senate organises Spirit Week for the Middle/ High School, a fun opportunity for kids to dress up and join in.  Last week, some students dressed up in different ways all week.

 

Grade 5 Sculptures 2
5W and 5C have recently completed their themed monument sculptures. They made their sculptures from clay and construction materials and chose a theme that could appeal to their age group.

Our last assembly of the year 2006 consisted of a festive variety of performances and presentations.

Grade 5 Sculptures
Grade 5 students are completing a sculpture unit in Art.  They had to make a famous world monument using various innovative modelling materials. 5B had the challenging task of building their sculpture from toast!

 

Bangkok Swim Meet
The Hammerheads swim team returned Monday afternoon from Bangkok where we competed against 6 other swim teams, from Thailand, Singapore and China, in a large and exciting international swim meet organized by the Bangkok Patana School.

 

Grade 2 Assembly
2H and 2T joined forces to present a Christmas themed assembly. Based on their last unit of inquiry ‘The Wider World” the Second graders set off on a journey around the world in search of Santa who had disappeared.

 

"Medieval Fair Afternoon" - IDU Culimnating Activity
On the afternoon of Tuesday, December 12th in the year of 1206 between the hours of 13.40pm and 14.50pm, Grade 7 students and teachers held their annual Medieval Fair Afternoon on the grounds of UNIS.

 

French Field Trip
HF 6 French advanced class went to the French School and meet students of their age. Our UNIS student did present in French the articulation of our three IB program - PYP, MYP and DP and the French students did present in English their educational system.

 

Friday ECC Assembly
The ECC held their very own assembly last Friday as there was not an elementary assembly scheduled. We were very fortunate to have one of Miss Carol's ASA music groups. 

 

ECC Learning Journey - 30 November 2006
Parents, caregivers and children of the Early Childhood Centre went on a journey of discovery and learning. The morning began with a morning tea for parents before they went to the classrooms to discover what and how the children are learning.

 

Grade 7 Beginners French
On the 28th of November UNIS Grade 7 Beginners French Students organised a treasure hunt on campus for the Students from the French School.  It was a fantastic way to get to know each other and interact in both languages.

The Second Annual Elementary Science Fair
Parents and various members of the community came in to the Elementary School and explored Science with students from grades one to five. Many parents expressed amazement at the student’s ability to explain their experiments in such detail.

 

Casino Royale - 23 November 2006
Middle School students and parents at UNIS were able to see the future of the gaming industry.  Twenty-six new games of chance were unveiled, including Checkmate, Chicken Cow Moo, and the ever-popular Double Trouble.

 

Balance, Travel, and Roll - Grade 1 Activity
Grade 1 students have been working on their gymnastics skills - balancing, travelling and rolling and using important skills like strength, body tension and presentation to make a short sequence.

 

The Empty Pot
Grade 1 recently performed the story "The Empty Pot" at the assembly they hosted. They studied this story as it is connected to planting and growing seeds.

 

Puppet Extraganza!
Grade 4 has just finished their puppet making project in Art as part of the unit of inquiry “Cultural Signals”. Each class studied a Vietnamese folktale, developed a character from the story and then turned the character into a puppet with a movable part.

 

Grade 2 Visits Science Lab
The Grade 2 students visited the Middle High school science lab where Mr. Hodgkinson amazed them with experiments about 'Heat'.

 

Hanoi's Contemporary Art Scene - a ComEd programme
The Contemporary Art Tour, held on Sunday, 6 November, 2006, was an opportunity for participants to find out more about the art scene in Hanoi . The tour guide was Ms Vu Kim Thu, who has worked at the School of Fine Art and is herself an established artist.

 

Grade 5 Camp Reports Back
The grade 5 camp was a great success for all the teachers involved as well as for the students. The location was picturesque, the facilities were great, the food was plenty and overall every minute was purposeful and fun.

 
UNIS Hanoi Celebrates UN Day
UN Day, on Friday, 27 October, was a celebration of our international culture through music, performance, our Parade of Flags, a wonderful lunch and workshops for our students.
 
Crazy Day Tuesday
On Tuesday 31st October, the ECC and Elementary School students went CRAZY! The SRC representatives decided that we needed to raise money for the relief of Typhoon Victims in the Danang area.
 
Lights, Camera, ...Action!
As part of their "Inventing the World" unit of inquiry Grade 3 children helped write a tv script that was a spin off of the ABC's "New Inventors" program. The cafeteria was dramatically turned into a tv studio and it was "lights, camera, ACTION!"
 
Puppets
During Art classes Grade 4 students made their own metre high puppets, which were based around characters from Vietnamese folktales. These will be displayed Friday November 10th during Elementary School assembly time.
 
Grade 5 are off to Camp!
This morning, Wednesday, 1 November, the Grade 5 students departed to Hoa Binh.  Next week we will have a full report with all their findings and photos from their three day camp.
 

Grade 8 Talk About Seeds with Grade 1 and Grade 4
As a culminating activity for our unit on Seeds, the Grade 8 Science classes created stories about the Life Cycle of a seed.

 
Bamboo Brainstorm
Grade 7 Design and Technology classes are designing a waterwheel for the school pond. They have designed and created mini models. 
 
Grade 9 Music Assessment
The Grade 9 music class performed their first assessed piece of music just before the October break.  What a great group of talented players!
 

UNIS Secondary Swim Meet
Students became a part of UNIS history on Wednesday as they were the first group to use the UNIS swimming pool competitively.

 

Kindergarten Visit to Hanoi Zoological Gardens
This week the Kindergarten classes visited the Hanoi Zoological Gardens.  As part of their current Unit Of Inquiry, Kindergarten are learning about animals.

 

UNIS French Language Students meet UNICEF Staff
On the 4th of October, grade 9,10 and 11 students of the French MYP advanced level and DP candidates visited the UNICEF headquarters in Vietnam .

 

ECC & Elementary School Moon Festival Celebration
The Vietnamese Children’s Festival Day of Tet Trung Thu (Moon Festival or Mid-Autumn Festival) is one of the most important festivals in Vietnam.  UNIS Hanoi has been preparing all week for this magical celebration and Friday the festivities began. 

 

Middle & High School Moon Festival Celebration
Middle School and High School along with the Nhat Tan school celebrated the Moon Festival. The Vietnamese students have brought this special celebration every year to UNIS Hanoi, to ensure new students learn more about this annual festival.

 

It's a Bird, It's a Plane, ...It's Grade 2
This past week the Grade 2's visited the Sofitel earlier this week as part of their Unit of Inquiry 'The Wider World'. They saw a lot of Hanoi city from a 'bird's eye view' and tried to draw their own map of what they could see from the 20th floor.

 

Moon Festival Preparations
Next Friday, 6 October 2006 is the Vietnamese Children’s Festival Day of Tet Trung Thu (Moon Festival or Mid-Autumn Festival), one of the most important festivals in Vietnam.  UNIS Hanoi has been preparing all week for this magical celebration. 

 

Happenin' High School Day
The Student Senate organized an afternoon of games and activities for the High School. The group activities built up appetites and the anticipation of lunch. There were hungry glances in the direction of the cafeteria.

 

Middle School Welcome Back Dance
The newly elected Student Council organised and ran a very successful evening. Aurelie, Mikaela, Victoria and Mariam were the MC's for the evening and organised slow and fast dances, dancing competition and many other fun events.

 

Firehall & Doctor Visit - Grade 1 Field Trip
What do I want to be when I grow up? A doctor or maybe a firefighter? As part of their Unit of Inquiry, Jobs People Do, 1st Graders were leaning how to conduct interviews to learn about various jobs in our communities.

 

Orientation Day
Orientation Day on Friday August 18 was well attended by the UNIS Community.
