Last Assembly of the 2006-2007 School Year
Our last day of school was 15 June and our whole school assembly was warm and enjoyable, and a fitting end to a good school year. The school said farewell to leaving students and teachers while also acknowledging the musical talents of some of our students.

Origami
On Monday June 4, Mrs. Nishikori, Mrs.Nishimura, Mrs. Yukinori and Mrs. Yamakawa visited Grade 6 English B classes and taught the students how to make various beautiful origami figures, including the paper crane.

Graduation Class of 2007 Ceremonies - Watch Video
Last night the 12th Grade students graduated from UNIS-Hanoi. The graduation ceremony was our largest to date and it was a smooth and enjoyable ceremony. The students expressed their joy at the ceremony as indeed did their parents and friends.

ECC children were under the Big Top on Thursday night for a Circus extravaganza. The evening was hot with anticipation and as the Big Parade began the evening was off to a super start.

Grade 8 student council provided a fun filled night when they hosted the inaugural grade 4/ 5 disco dance held recently. All students and teachers joined in with the dancing and games.

True Fluxus in art was experienced through the myriad of studio works from across the grades, as well as the Hoi An fashion show and Digital Imagery presentations at our recent art show.

The ECC and Elementary school recently held their Art Show at UNIS. It was a colourful week on campus, and the displays were welcoming, varied, and showed a large cross section of artwork produced over the year. |

Grade 2 Field Trips to the Zoo
Last week the Grade Two students went to the Hanoi Zoo. Everyone enjoyed seeing the many animals and this generated discussions about the role zoos play in protecting animals.

Trek to Mt Fansipan
Recently, nine students and three teachers set out on UNIS’ first ever outdoor hiking expedition to climb Mt. Fansipan. After a long train ride to Sapa Friday night, the group set out to Tram Ton to begin their climb.

Reefs to Rainforests
Selected students from 9th to 12th grades went on a trip to Thailand in February to learn about the unique natural ecosystems in the area. They recently presented their experience to the rest of the 9th – 11th graders at a high school assembly.

Elementary Swim Meet Results
The UNIS Elementary Swim Meet was a huge success this year!! We had all the students in Grades 3, 4 and 5 competing for their School House Team and swimming in plenty of races.

Grade 1 with their parents showed each other how to make a healthy snack. All the snacks came from their home country. Then at snack time all grade 1 with their parents and teachers ate the yummy, healthy snacks.

How to Stay Active
There are many ways to stay active. For their assembly, Grade 1 showed us some fun and easy ways. Doing the Hokey Pokey, setting up our own circuit training and even dancing while we are sitting in the car anything is possible.

Pizza Meet Summary
Our swim team’s first ever “Pizza Meet” in which nearly 50 of our swimmers from Elementary to High school competed for great prizes was held recently. A fun, friendly yet spirited atmosphere filled the day as teammates raced each other in a variety of sprint events.

Hammerheads Swimmer takes 5th Place
Last week, Nina Reinhardt of grade 9 took part in the 2007 Vietnamese National Age Group Championships in Da Nang. Vietnamese swimmers of ages 10 to 17 came from around the country to compete in a variety of events over a five-day period.

Hanoi Schools Rugby Championship - 24 March 2007
It was so good to see so many of our students from 3rd to 12th Grades playing rugby on our fields recently. There were so many good games and it was wonderful to see our students enjoying themselves in such a sporting competition.

Much Ado About Nothing
The Shakepeare Society, an after school activity, recently mounted a production of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. The play is a set text for the IB English syllabus and one of Shakespeare’s most loved and successful comedies.

Learning about Lacquer
As part of the Vietnamese program and our UOI, Grade 2 students met a special visitor, a lacquer painter. His name is Thong. Mr. Thong has shown us how to draw a portrait and how to make a lacquer painting, the unique art in Vietnam.

44 UNIS Singers travelled to Hoang Mai District recently for a special meeting with the children of Yen So Kindergarten. They were greeted by an amazing welcoming committee of 3 4 and 5 year olds dressed in bright costumes and playing home made instruments.

Grade 4 recently learned the Unit Of Inquiry, The Global Marketplace. Children undertook inquiries into needs and wants, goods and services, supply and demand and buying, selling and trading which all took place in a recent assembly.

Walkathon for Blue Dragon
Elementary children from pre k to grade 5 participated in a walkathon on Friday 2nd March. Each child ran or walked approximately 15- 20 minutes around a 250 metre sport field.

Last Friday the ten 11th grade Ab Initio Spanish students had a session cooking simple food used every day in many parts of Latin America, food items that have been in use for thousands of years.

The Grade 8 performance arts class wreaked a bit of havoc at our school last Friday. Students participated in a form of Guerilla Theatre and invaded classrooms throughout the campus.

To finish their Unit of Inquiry ‘Houses, Houses Everywhere’ Grade 1 visited the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology and saw many different types of houses found in Vietnam.

In the current Year 4 Unit Of Inquiry, The Global Marketplace, students have created their very own businesses. The task for grade 4 students was to persuade discerning shoppers, the grade 3 children, to purchase their products or services at the Trade Expo.

The Mokens - Tet Field Trip
Selected students from 9th to 12th grades are going soon on a trip to Thailand to visit an indigenous group known as the Mokens. During the visit, they will be going to explore their culture, understand their way of living and how they survived the Tsunami in 2004.

The Blind Man & the Elephant
January 26 is India’s National day. The Grade 3’s brought a touch of Bollywood to our assembly on this special day with our dramatization of the story of ‘The Blind Men and the Elephant’.

Bat Trang Pottery Village Visit
The Grade 2 students visited Bat Trang as part of their Unit of Inquiry “Go”. On the way to Bat Trang they observed many forms of transport and were constantly spotting new kinds.

returned Monday afternoon from Bangkok where
we competed against 6 other swim teams, from
Thailand, Singapore and China, in a large
and exciting international swim meet organized
by the Bangkok Patana School.

Parents, caregivers and children

On the 28th of November UNIS
Grade 7 Beginners French Students organised
a treasure hunt on campus for the Students
from the French School. It was a fantastic
way to get to know each other and interact
in both languages.

Parents and various members
of the community came in to the Elementary School and explored
Science with students from grades one to five. Many parents expressed
amazement at the student’s ability to explain their experiments
in such detail.

Middle School students and
parents at UNIS were able to see the future
of the gaming industry. Twenty-six
new games of chance were unveiled, including Checkmate,
Chicken Cow Moo, and the ever-popular Double
Trouble.

Travel, and Roll - Grade 1 Activity
Grade 1 students have
been working on their gymnastics skills - balancing, travelling
and rolling and using important skills like strength, body tension
and presentation to make a short sequence.

the story "The Empty Pot" at the
assembly they hosted. They studied this story
as it is connected to planting and growing
seeds.

Extraganza!
Grade 4 has just finished
their puppet making project in Art as part
of the unit of inquiry “Cultural Signals”.
Each class studied a Vietnamese folktale,
developed a character from the story and
then turned the character into a puppet with
a movable part.

The Contemporary Art Tour,
held on Sunday, 6 November, 2006, was an opportunity
for participants to find out more about the
art scene in Hanoi . The tour guide was Ms
Vu Kim Thu, who has worked at the School of
Fine Art and is herself an established artist.

The grade 5 camp was a great
success for all the teachers involved as well
as for the students. The location was picturesque,
the facilities were great, the food was plenty
and overall every minute was purposeful and

On Tuesday 31st October, the ECC
and Elementary School students went CRAZY! The
SRC representatives decided that we needed to raise
money for the relief of Typhoon Victims in the

As part of their "Inventing
the World" unit of inquiry Grade 3 children
helped write a tv script that was a spin off of
the ABC's "New Inventors" program. The
cafeteria was dramatically turned into a tv studio
and it was "lights, camera, ACTION!" |

During Art classes Grade 4 students made their
own metre high puppets, which were based around characters from
Vietnamese folktales. These will be displayed Friday November 10th
during Elementary School assembly time. |

The

festivities began.

This past week the Grade 2's
visited the Sofitel earlier this week as part
of their Unit of Inquiry 'The Wider World'.
They saw a lot of Hanoi city from a 'bird's
