After School Activities (ASA) Programme

The purpose of ASAs is to provide structured opportunities for students to learn and develop skills in the fields of the arts, sport and recreation in mixed age groups.

It provides students from all levels – beginners to advanced – with opportunities to try new activities or extend their skills in their areas of interest. It provides the school with an opportunity to prepare for performance events, such as drama and music activities, and prepare sporting teams for competitions. Overall, it gives our students a chance to mix with a range of other students from our diverse population.

At UNIS, we see this as an important part of student life but it’s important to note that our activities are optional and some families may choose to achieve these goals in other community settings.  It’s important for students to select and attend those activities which they feel committed to as well as provide interests outside the academic setting.

We welcome students to sign-up for activities that they can incorporate into their other commitments. It is especially important for Middle/High School students to take into account their other commitments and not sign-up for too many activities that may cause stress and problems balancing ASAs with their academic work and their Community and Service commitments.

Session 1
Monday, 17 September to Friday, 7 December
After School Activities Session 1 commences on Monday, 17 September. This gives parents time to organize other outside activities – such as music or sport lessons – and plan their ASAs around other commitments.

Arts Only Days
This year, we have dedicated some days to conduct arts activities (including visual and performing arts like drama, music and crafts). In Middle/High School it is Monday and Thursday from 3:15 to 4:15 pm and for Elementary School, Tuesday from 3:15 to 4:15 pm. These days have been set in order for students to make a commitment to performance activities and to try new arts activities. There will be no sports activities on these days.

Bus and Transport
ASA students will take the late school bus home on the days they do their activity. The Transport Coordinator is informed and students are allocated to the appropriate late bus. Families should note the days their children attend activities and the Session 1 start and finish dates in order to make arrangements for those children who travel by car.

Elementary School Details
Elementary After School Activities range from arts to sport games. The program is available to students from Kindergarten to Grade 5 and runs from 3:15 to 4:15 pm from Monday to Friday. Students from Kindergarten to Grade 2 can sign up for a maximum of two activities; students from Grades 3 to 5 can sign up for a maximum of three activities.

Below are some dates that families need to note:

Thursday, 30 August: Students receive ASA booklet through classroom teachers.
Wednesday, 5 September: Return Preference form and signed Transport permission to classroom teachers.
Friday, 14 September: Students notified of preferences in which they have been enrolled.
Monday, 17 September: After School Activities commence.

Middle/High School Details
Middle/High School ASAs are conducted from 3:15 to 4:15 pm and 4:20 to 5:20 pm.

Information about ASAs will be available to students in Week 3 (commencing Tuesday, 4 September due to the Monday, 3 September holiday) via homerooms, on noticeboards and on the web.  Students sign-up for activities shortly after they receive their options at a one-day sign-up that takes place during lunch and break times. The list of activities and the names enrolled in that activity will then be posted on noticeboards and on the student/staff portal later that week, in good time before the start of the ASA session.

Wednesday Early Dismissal
There are no ASAs for Middle/High School on Wednesdays due to the early dismissal for Middle/High on Wednesday afternoons (2:03 pm) to allow for attendance at Mother Tongue Programme lessons. If students do not have Mother Tongue Programme lessons, they will be dismissed at 2:03 pm and will need to depart the campus.

Community and Service Programme: Grades 6 to 10 and
Community Action Service: Grades 11 and 12
The Community and Service Programme is an important part of the IB Middle Years and Diploma Programmes. Students are required to complete specified hours in order to complete their minimum Community and Service Requirements at UNIS and make a meaningful contribution to the community in which we live. Click here for further details.

Community and Service activities options will be made available to students at the same time as ASA options are made available as some of these activities do take place during ASA times. This gives students the opportunity to choose and balance their academic, Community and Service and ASA commitments.
