MRISA MIDDLE SCHOOL

Grades 6-8 Basketball and Volleyball
ISE Chonburi, Thailand - April 20th to 23rd, 2006

Basketball

Boys– Coach Lewis
Although their record (1-2) and standing (7th place) may not reflect it, the boys basketball team had a positive experience at the MRISA tournament. They showed improvement in all facets of the game as the day went on and always showed great teamwork and sportsmanship. In the first of their two losses, they were only down by 2 points at halftime and their second loss was by a single point after leading for a good portion of the game. They won their final game handily and the result was really never in doubt. Finally, it should be noted that only 4 teams at the tournament ended with a better record than our UNIS boys.

Ren Smis was chosen by the committee of coaches as a tournament all-star, while Yoel A. Jogiono and Eun Han Kim were named team stars.

Girls - Coach Juteau
The UNIS Girls Basketball Team had a great weekend at the Middle School MRISA Sports Exchange. They played three hard fought games on Friday. In the first game UNIS beat ISE B team 34-4 to advance to the winners side of the tournament. Game two was a closely contested match which saw UNIS defeat VIS 14-11 to advance to the girls basketball final. In the final UNIS played ISPP - the same school the faced in the final in each of the previous two seasons - and lost a close game 18-14 to take second place.

Giulia Rinaldi and Tess Sheehan were awarded Tournament Allstars for their great play all day. Rosie Turner-Goldsack and Claire Watson were awarded Teamstars for their contribution to the team throughout the season.

Volleyball
A team - Coach Voigt
B team - stand in coach Juteau

Despite the wear and tear on our players from the Basketball games on the previous day, the A-team put on an excellent performance during the Volleyball tournament. In the morning, we competed against ISHCMC A, VIS and ISPP B winning all games by two sets to none. We came first in our pool which ensured we played in the championship round in the afternoon. The championship round began with a very difficult and challenging game against the A-team of the hosting school, ISE. Our players showed nerves of steel and fought like warriors. There wasn’t a second in which any player thought of giving up. What a fascinating match! Their outstanding teamwork and their excellent skills were the key to winning this most important game. After this match, nothing could stop them from beating the ISE B-team and bringing the MRISA Volleyball Championship back to UNIS for the second year in a row. Yoel, Ren, Hyun Oo, and Jacob were awarded “All Stars” for their outstanding performances and Rosie and Tess received the “Team Stars” award.

The UNIS Co-Ed Volleyball B Team played 5 matches on the Saturday of the MRISA tournament. They were a competitive team and lost their first three matches in close games. The first three losses meant that the UNIS B team played in the 10th, 11th and 12th place group in the afternoon. UNIS B won their final two matches against VIS and HIS to take 10th place.

Teamstars were awarded to Nick Paredes and Peter Nurmi for their contribution to the team throughout the season and during the tournament.
