  • The UNIS Hanoi Mission Statement
  • Our mission is to encourage students to be independent, life-long learners who strive for excellence and become responsible stewards of our global society and natural environment, achieved within a supportive community that values diversity and through a programme reflecting the ideals and principles of the United Nations.

One of Three Programs
  • Primary Years Program (PYP)
    • Ages 3 to 11 years
  • Middle Years Program (MYP)
    • Ages 11 to 16 years
  • Diploma Program (DP)
    • Ages 16 to 18 years
  • UNIS is an IB WORLD SCHOOL

5
The aim of the MYP:
  • To couple
  • academic achievement
  • with
  • responsible citizenship.

6
How we do it.
  • Our curriculum requires more than “knowing”.
  • It requires
  • reflective thinking
  • analytical thinking
  • creative thinking.
  • It includes
  • problem solving
  • discussion of personal beliefs.
  • It leads to critical thinking and action.
7
For students, the curriculum can be just a pile of jigsaw pieces. They need a picture to guide them.
8
The results of doing MYP:
  • Students
  • become independent learners.
  • recognize relationships between school subjects and the outside world.
  • can adapt to new situations.
  • can combine knowledge, practical intelligence and social intelligence to solve real-world problems alone or in a group.
9
The Areas of Interaction (AoIs)
  • There are many attributes of responsible citizenship.
  • These have been organized into five groups called the Areas of Interaction
  • Environment (E) - What are my responsibilities about the resources we need to live on Earth?

  • Homo faber (HF) - How do humans create and what are the consequences of our creations?
  • Community and Service (C&S) - How can I contribute to my communities?
  • Approaches to Learning (ATL) - How do I learn best?
  • Health and Social Education (HSE) - How can I make responsible choices?

  • Would you be able to prioritize them?
  • We can‘t.

22
And now to assessment
  • How do we assess how well your child is meeting the aim of the MYP?
23
Give this bedroom a grade out of 100%
  • Shouldn‘t we all give it the same grade?
24
What are we looking for?
  • Cleanliness
    • It was dirty so you gave it 48%
  • Tidiness
    • Many things were out of place so 32%
  • Colour Coordination
    • The items matched well so 100%
    • Average of these three %s is 60%
25
Does it make sense to AVERAGE these three different skills into one grade of 60%?
  • No!
  • Does that help the bedroom’s owner improve?
  •  No!
  • Why not?
    • From ’60%’ the learner does not know where he went wrong or where he excelled on each separate skill.
    • The bedroom owner needs to see his achievement on each skill separately.
    • And he needs to see exactly what you are wanting so he can try to earn the highest level.
26
Cleanliness:
What do I need to do to achieve a 6?

27
Tidiness:
What do I need to do to achieve a 6?
28
Colour Coordination:
What do I need to do to achieve a 3?
29
Assess this bedroom against the three criteria.
30
"MYP uses"
  • MYP uses
  • Criterion-based assessment
  • Each subject has a different set of criteria
  • Expect to see several grades on one task.
31
Summary of Achievement for the Report Card
32
To summarize assessment:
  • Each subject uses its own set of criteria to assess student work.  These are not of equal value towards the final grade.

  • One assignment may assess one or many of these criteria so the assignment may come home with one or many results on it.

  • Halfway through the year the teacher considers the data collected for each criterion and judges the level that most appropriately describes the student‘s achievement at that time.  This happens again at the end of the year.

  • Twice a year the collection of data is converted to a value from
  • 1 to 7.
33
Putting it all together
  • The Personal Project
    • Near the end of the MYP the student has the opportunity to create a project all on their own.  This project will show their deep understanding of the Areas of Interaction and any topic that interests them.
    • A separate power point presentation is on our website.  It is used to introduce the project to students and includes examples of topics chosen by students.

34
And now….
  • Time for The Quiz
