College Counseling
College planning and acceptance is an exciting
time in a students life. Even though the college search and application
process can be stressful, with the right tools and resources most students
are able to complete the process with ease. It is the job of the College
Counselor to help students seek the best tertiary educational experience
based on their individual needs. Though many students focus on the U.S.
for their college education, students do attend universities all over
the world.
The following information should help you get started.
Please contact,
UNIS's College Counselor, Karen Hafner if you have any questions or concerns.

Conducting a College
Search
- Myroad.com a
NACAC approved site for all your college search, career and application
needs.
- International Baccalaureate Organization Provides
a list of universities world wide who recognize the IB diploma and
provides the score required for acceptance.
- CollegeView allows
you to conduct searches and apply to some schools electronically.
- CollegeNet provides
an online college search feature along with other information about
institutions in the US and Canada.
- Peterson's Guides is
a major publisher of college materials. Peterson's Education Center
offers information about undergraduate education, graduate school,
summer programs, and more. It too has a search feature.
- Princeton
Review has an extensive site. Just be aware that it exists
primarily to convince you to sign-up for an SAT prep course.
- Kaplan also
exists to get you to sign up for a test prep course. But they have
a wide range of other information on their web site.
- Graduate
and Professional School Information a site which may be especially
useful to faculty and parents.
- College rankings are
highly overrated. Yet most students still want to know how the colleges
they are considering compare. You can find 2007
US rankings from the U.S News & World Report. Never
ever choose a particular institution simply because of it's ranking.
- Canadian college and university rankings from Canada's Macleans
Magazine

Electronic Applications
-
Several institutions have developed electronic applications.
Many can be found at one or more of the following sites. Since institutions
often choose to have their applications included on only one site,
you may need to check them all to see if an application exists. Start
with the top one on the following list and work your way down.
-
The Common Application is accepted by over 250 colleges. Apply
online or Download a
Mac or PC version of the 2006-07 Common Application.

SAT Registration
and Preparation
-
The College
Board allows students to register
for the SAT on-line. The on-line method provides
an immediate confirmation and registration number. You
can
also release
your SAT-II scores if you used "score choice" or
send your scores to colleges through this site. A credit
card is required.
-
Testprep can
help you prepare for the SAT I. Their WebWare(tm) for
the SAT test is a complete SAT test-prep course. It's online, it's
complete, and it's free!
-
The Kaplan
Educational Centers offer commercial test preparation
programs. While the purpose of this site is to encourage
you to sign up for an SAT prep course, you will also
find free downloadable software.
-
The Princeton
Review is another provider of test preparation
programs. In addition to test information, the Princeton
Review home
page offers general information about college admission
and financial aid, and provides additional educational
web links.

Financial Aid Information
-
Start
here with the Financial Aid Information page. This
page provides a free, comprehensive, independent, and objective
guide to student financial aid. It also provides links
to scholarship search sites.
-
If you are NOT
a US citizen but are looking for financial aid to attend
a US university, this page provides excellent information
about the problems you face. A list of colleges and universities
that do provide aid to international students is included.
-
Here's where you can find the US FAFSA
form. FAFSA stands for the Free Application for
Federal Student Aid.
-
-
Beware of scholarship
scams. If you are asked to pay money to get scholarship
money, it's probably a scam.

Finding a University Homepage
Almost all colleges and universities now have a web site. You can
learn about the campus, the courses, the faculty, admission information
- and at some schools, you can apply on-line. The information on the
web site may not be as complete as the printed information these schools
send out, but it is worth a visit. Most schools allow you to request
a regular (paper) application via e-mail. Here are some sites that
can point you in the proper direction. Use whichever one comes up more
quickly.
